Animation for Aga Khan Museum artefacts

Our 2D and 3D animation work for the Aga Khan Museum presents four artefacts through movement and changes in viewpoint. The objects provide the subject; the animation directs attention through their form and detail.

The sequence above combines the four objects within one animation project. Their forms and details give the movement its subject, with the project’s contributors credited alongside the work.

Presenting an object through animation

An animated sequence can direct attention towards shape, detail and the relationship between parts of an object. It can also give a viewer time to look at a feature that might be missed in a single still image.

The approach needs to fit the material. A cultural object has a particular identity and history, so the reference information matters as much as the visual treatment.

Reference material and review

For a similar commission, gather the photographs, drawings or models available for each object. Identify which details must be represented accurately and who will review the work from the subject’s perspective.

If the sequence includes names, dates or descriptive text, agree those with the appropriate source. A curator or subject specialist can check that the names, dates and descriptions accurately accompany the images.

Where will the animation be used?

A website, exhibition display and social post may need different lengths or proportions. Establish the intended viewing context before the movement and composition are developed.

Tell us whether the sequence needs sound, text, a loop or a particular place within a longer film. Those requirements should be discussed as part of the production scope.

Discuss an animation project

We work on animation for cultural and commercial subjects, alongside photography and filmmaking. Explore our services or send us a brief with the subject, available references and intended outputs.

If you are still deciding how to present the material, describe the audience and what you need them to understand.
