Ballet portfolio photography in the studio

Ballet portfolio photography in the studio

Our studio ballet photography presents dance within a portfolio brief. The work considers the dancer’s form alongside lighting, framing and the intended use of the photographs.

For an application, the organisation’s current requirements take priority. For a personal portfolio, the direction can be developed around the range of images the dancer needs. The session should be planned accordingly.

Check the requirements first

If the photographs are for an application, obtain the current requirements directly from the organisation. Send them to us before the session, including any specified positions, framing, clothing or file requirements.

Different organisations can ask for different material. We should work from the actual brief rather than assume one standard set will suit every application.

Prepare for the session

Plan the clothing and any changes in advance. Make a list of the essential photographs and discuss how much variety is needed beyond them.

Allow time to prepare and warm up appropriately for your own practice. If a teacher or other person needs to help guide the positions, discuss that when arranging the session so their role is clear.

Technical form and photographic presentation

A photograph needs to work visually, but the dancer or relevant teacher should guide the technical dance requirements. The purpose of the session is to create the agreed images, with the framing and lighting considered alongside the positions being shown.

Reference material can help explain the direction, particularly for a personal portfolio where there is more flexibility in the brief.

Discuss your ballet photographs

Send an enquiry or email us with the intended use, required images and any application deadline.

If you have an official photograph specification, include it so we can discuss the session around it. The required poses and image specifications will guide the session plan, with time for any additional portfolio photographs agreed in advance.
